August 20, 2013 – It’s already
7:04 am but the rain is still in its climax and would not wane down. When I went
outside – it’s a DELUGE. It seems flood is almost 3-4 meters deep and if it
continues to pour until the afternoon, then it would go much deeper than that.
This is the way of life here in Manila, especially during the rainy season.
Looks like typhoon ‘Maring’ (Trami) is responsible for Habagat (Southwest
Monsoon) which means heavy and prolonged rains that can cause severe flooding
in low lying areas in Metro Manila.
Would this be another Ondoy?
Well, I hope not because that can be devastating for many people. The immense
damage it can cause both in infrastructure and livelihood can be significant.
As they always say, “extreme floods can take lives and livelihood.” So, I hope
it will NOT be another Ondoy. While we are waiting for the rain to calm down –
let’s just hope and PRAY for a better weather in the coming hours. This is our
first experience of Habagat here in Luzon, since we just moved here from Davao
City. My wife is also a bit anxious and we never expected that flood water
would reach our gate.
These past few years, the weather
has become more and more erratic and that led to extreme rains and flooding. Pestering
our lives during rainy season, but Mother Nature has its own way of getting
back at us. All we can do now is to take the necessary precaution and to be
more active in protecting our nature or else we can expect more great floods in
the metro. To protect ourselves from nature’s wrath, we need to change our ways
– a paradigm shift that can make us more attuned to our environment. Instead of
over expanding due to commercialization, why not leave a space for nature to
thrive. The more trees we have, the better our chances of stopping the floods.
Climate change and other factors
may have caused these freak weather conditions, but one thing is certain – we cannot
absolve ourselves. We have hastened climate change, and this is what we can
expect for the coming years.
