Knowing Forgetfulness and Keeping Your Mind Healthy
People who experience sudden changes in their memory, behavior and personality might be suffering from a brain disease called “dementia.” This type of disease can significantly affect the ability of an individual to carry out their normal daily activities. Although, there are many types of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is just one of them.
There are several symptoms that can cause changes in the brain function. Here are some symptoms of Dementia that you need to watch out for:
- Unable to follow directions
- Repeatedly asking the same questions
- Becoming disoriented about places, time and people
- Neglecting personal hygiene, nutrition and safety
- Becoming lost to a familiar place that he/she once knew
Some of these conditions that cause dementia are treatable while others are irreversible. So, if you see these symptoms from anyone in your family, it would be wise to consult a doctor as soon as possible. Stress can also cause memory loss and some of these can be attributed to emotional problems, feeling lonely or bored. Even death of a relative, friend or spouse can also cause memory lapses.
Currently, scientists are still in the process of developing new drugs that could someday reverse, prevent or even slow the damage caused by dementia or particularly Alzheimer’s disease. However, to avoid memory loss and forgetfulness you can try to keep your memory sharp. Here are some good suggestions that can keep your brain in top conditions:
- Stimulate your body and mind through exercise and physical fitness.
- Keeping a positive outlook in life, avoid negative thoughts that can stress your mind.
- Limit the use of alcoholic beverages, heavy drinking can cause permanent damage to your brain.
- Planning your tasks ahead and using calendars, notes and other memory aids.
Our brain is a significant part of our body, keeping it healthy is a must. A sharp memory can help you in your daily activities; it can even provide you with a better chance of achieving a successful career.
before, i used to take pride in having very good memory, not these days, so i rely heavily now on calendars as well. :) and i love using calendars, as they give me reminders :)

ReplyDeleteyes... have you watch the movie of drew barrymore entitled 51st dates? That's the extreme case of dementia and you can really see the ordeals they've been through.
DeleteLike Betchai, I used to boast of my photographic memory. I am good at remembering minute details and could even memorize one whole book, in toto. LOL!
ReplyDeleteBut as I aged, remembering things is becoming less and less reliable. I need to keep myself organized. Good thing though it's not yet to the point of having dementia, thanks heavens!

DeleteYay, I always forget things even I have visit that place for a couple of times. Imagine I was like driving the same street three times before I was able to get out from there. That's why sometimes I take notes so I don't forget.

Deletewow thank you for this tips. im only 33 but im very forgetful already. sometimes i thought i have a memory gap where i can remember part of what i did just a moment ago. specially if i get distracted with my little boy here in the house. good thing i havent forgotten to turn off the stove yet, before living the house. lol!

DeleteI have been suffering from Thyroid problems and I got my thyroid totally taken out through Thyroidectomy surgery. Doctor said being forgetful is one of its symptoms you have to deal with. Putting a list together of your activities helps a lot to remember things you'd like to do and you want to get accomplish.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your experience Claire :)) I also have a friend who went through some major operations due to an accident and he too has memory lapses. He always carry his organizer with him to help him remember all his daily activities.
DeleteStress is one of the major contributor to aggravate memory loss. Let me also add on the tips you have given to sharpen one's memory - eating healthy food like berries, nuts/peanuts, fish rich in omega-3 and leafy greens. Eating healthy food and living a healthy lifestyle can bring more oxygen and nutrients to the brain which are vital in delaying memory loss.

Deleteoh! Thank you for all those helpful info. At least we can now easily detect any symptoms from any one we know, and also knowing what might trigger it can somehow give us points on what to avoid.
ReplyDeleteI've been operated four times with general anesthesia and I noticed that I easily forget things. I just hope this is not a symptom of any serious forgetfulness... only a side effect.

ReplyDeleteI give my mind some drills to keep it sharp... puzzles, sudoku and others though I still have forgetful spells also having general anesthesia like Marri twice. I guess using the brain often keeps it sharp.

ReplyDeleteomg...I am 36 years old and sometimes I forget where I put my keys or hanky. I guess I need brain vitamins - FOLIC ACID, B12, C, and E.

ReplyDeleteEating nuts is a good way to improve the brain functions, including retaining the memory. Playing word and number games also work. I guess that's the upside in playing crosswords and sudoku games! LOL!
ReplyDeleteOMG! I am not sure if hubby has dementia 'coz he keeps on forgetting lots of things especially house and car keys. Whenever, wherever I have prepared almost 10 duplicates 'coz he keeps on forgetting where he put them and lose them eventually. Is there a cure for it?
ReplyDeleteIn my case, I focus to combat forgetfulness. Sometimes, too many things need our attention that we just forget about some things. That's why we need to focus. Anyway, dementia is another story, a doctor's intervention is really needed if one is suffering from dementia.

ReplyDeleteMy grandfather had dementia and I do not want any of my family members including myself to have that as well. I think reading is also one of the best prevention.
