Robot Police - A Not So Distant Reality

The Future Of Law Enforcement

If you’ve watched the 2012 version of Total Recall, then you might have noticed the robotic police force employed by the UFB (United Federation Of Britain). They are called Synths on that movie, and they are programmed to uphold the law or whatever directive that has been inputted unto them. This scenario may no longer be a work of science fiction in the near future, because as of now advancements in robotics is beyond its normal capacity. As hundreds of companies all over the world invested more on automation and robotics to fast track their daily activities; seems like human intervention will only be within the supervisory level.

The most significant leap in humanoid robotics is the CHARLI series, developed as a research platform to study bipedal walking and autonomous behaviour of synthetic humanoid robots. These robots are ultra-light weight (15kgs to be exact) and they are low cost, so they can be mass produced. So far the next generation CHARLI series or CHARLI-2 is more stable, intelligent and autonomous – it also has some soccer playing skills.

Capabilities of the CHARLI Humanoid Robot

If you look at CHARLI you’ll noticed the resemblance it has with the Synths on the Total Recall Movie. You may wonder if they integrate these humanoid robots within the police force. What would be the outcome? You can cite several scenarios and it all leads to more questions and speculations…

For sure, in the coming years, Japan will be the first country to employ a humanoid robotic police force. A law enforcement body that is capable of enforcing laws and ordinances without corruption and red tape, efficient in terminating and apprehending offenders, answers to only one protocol set by the government.

Countries like the Philippines will also benefit from this breakthrough, as over population seems imminent and corruption is rampant within the current police force. We need more police officers on the field that won’t resort to scallywag tactics.  However, the budget to purchase these robots will always be an issue like everything else in our country.

Peace and order will always be a factor in any country, without it – a country cease to exist. We need an instrument that will protect us from the bad elements of our society. I just wish that Synths will be a reality in the coming years.

All these tinny details are made with lot of background knowledge. I like it a lot. This was a useful post and I think it is rather easy to see from the other comments as well that this post is well written and useful.Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a lot and never seem to get something done….
