Cyber Info: Meet The Hackers!

In our current technology, the Internet has become a bridge that broke down the boundaries of communication and data transfer. While this may seem a positive outcome that led many nations to progress, it became a double edge sword where the criminal minds have also flourished. Cyber security is one of the most significant threats to the global economy – whereas several prominent countries today are more dependent on the Internet. A major cyber-attack can cripple any of the nation’s infrastructures like the power grid, online banking networks and military assets and this can lead to chaos.

The culprits for all these threats are part of a subculture group that took media attention due to their notoriety – we’ve known them as the Hackers! When you think of a hacker, you can picture a teenager hacking a high security database system and stealing all essential data – quite fascinating and a little bit terrifying. However, we should understand that there are different types of hackers and they are classified according to their motives.

In reality, the general public should be thankful to hackers for what they’ve contributed to our current information technology as well as the development of our computer systems. Here are the different types of hackers and their contribution to society – Good or Bad…

The Black Hat Hackers

The pirates of the virtual seas – this type of hackers have one purpose and that is to break into your computer system and steal any of your important data. They will also hijack your domain and ransom it to you for a ridiculous fee and they do this crime either for personal gain or gratification.

The Gray Hat Hackers

This group of hackers is not as bad as the black hat ones but still they break important rules and that could also lead to a crime. Usually, they break into a high security data system but they do not steal anything. They just leave a trace by integrating a virus or malware into the system – all that for personal recognition.

The White Hat Hackers

These are the good hackers - and they do good work by hacking into high security systems or sites in order to improve the security of that particular site. So that other types of hackers will have a hard time breaking into the site’s security system.

As a final note, all these hackers used the same techniques or methods in compromising the security measures put in placed on a certain website. However, their goals are very much different.
