Doomsday 2012 – Countdown To Extinction

Man-Made Doomsday Scenarios That Can Happen In The Near Future

As we all know it, December 21, 2012 is the day of reckoning… according to doomsday soothsayers and Mayan prophecy advocates. So we only have two months more to go before doomsday, and that’s based on the Mayan Calendar that predicted – the great changes that will happen during the winter solstice. There are hundreds of speculations on how the earth will end, but one thing holds true – we are baffled, humoured and sometimes afraid that this event might really happen or just another one of those flopped prophecies we saw in the past.

The end of everything is a statement commonly used by religions to discipline and rekindle the faith of their followers. Actually, even science proved that extinction events happened in the past and will likely to occur in the future – but the question is - When and How? The most famous Armageddon event that we all know is an “Asteroid Strike,” like in the Bruce Willis movie of the same title. Some also claimed that a Super-Volcano, Polar-Shifts and Solar Flares will be the main reasons for Earth’s demise. However, there are still several imminent threats that looms in our world - and these threats are closer to reality than naturally-caused extinctions.

There’s no question that we are the masters of this planet and we developed technologies that helped us progress more. We cannot deny the fact that we need to alter nature in order to achieve progress. However, we forgot the resiliency of nature and its power to wipe us all out in an instant.

Here are some apocalyptic events that have been triggered by our own technology.

Nuclear Terror Attack:

The Cold War was the setting stage between the Soviet Union and the United States, and during those times, they amassed a vast number of nuclear weapons. This brought about the great arms race that gathered 70,000 nuclear warheads for both countries, dwarfing any other nuclear weapon states during those times. Lucky for us, they made an agreement during the 80’s until 90’s to dismantle most of their nuclear warheads and lower their overall nuclear arsenal.

Unfortunately, we are living in a globalized world and communication is rapid as well as technology exchange can swiftly move from one nation to another.  The possibility of a terrorist-led nuclear attack is a real threat that we cannot hide.

Great Floods Due To Climate Change:

Coal burning plants and fossil-fuel technologies are just few of the factors that have contributed to the over-concentration of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Basically, these gases acts like a giant blanket that traps the heat of the sun and prevents it from leaving our atmosphere. This could trigger a number of ecological changes that may lead us to increasing global temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns. No wonder, we see so much water this year – flooding is just one of the signs of climate change.

Contagion Caused By Biological Weapons:

Today, scientists have already developed several bio-engineered vaccines to cure and eliminate common diseases like dengue fever, hepatitis and even heart ailments. Technology has paved the way for geneticists to even develop a bio-engineered cell to act as physiological pacemakers. Every day we are moving closer to understanding the human genome.  Nonetheless, we are also capable of creating pathogens that could bring harm to other species and most particularly to us - humans. Bio-engineered cells can be weaponized and released to any country and this could bring chaos and death.

Population Overload:

Currently, our population stands at 8 billion and most experts say that there are 5 babies being born every 1 second in the world. That’s roughly 210,000,000 births per year, and this could lead us to “Critical-Mass.” Our resources are limited, and that will include food, shelter and the energy that we used in our daily lives. If the demand overcomes the supply, then there will be chaos – war will break out and regional conflicts will be ignited. This particular scenario will likely to happen in the near future.

In my own opinion, the world will not end on December 21, 2012. However, nothing is permanent in this world – and that includes the world itself. So, let’s just do what we can for our environment, while we still have an environment to take care for!
