Dealing With Depression

Combating Depression - The First Step To A Happier Life

When we look at our world today, there are lots of things to be depressed about. If you’ve watched or read the latest news about the “Connecticut Shooting,” you would have to say it is the most unfortunate event that happened in the USA. According to the news, there were at least 20 school children and 6 adults who lost their lives when a lone gunman runs amok on their school. The gunman identified by authorities as Adam Lanza, who has very obscured motives as to why he did such heinous acts. However, if we look closely to Adam’s record, it is clear that he is a very depressed kid, a mild case of autism and has a severe social interaction problem.

Through history, we can see that most cold-blooded killers have some depression issues that went overboard and gradually pushed them to commit those crimes. As matter of fact, depression is also the main factor in most suicide cases all over the world. A lot of people have many experiences when it comes to depression but most of them don’t know how to react to such an event. If you are paralyzed by depression, then for sure you will have a hard time making the right decisions – making your situation a lot worse than it was before.

Depression is a negative feeling that drains your energy and stops you from moving forward. It will be difficult to overcome depression, but it’s not impossible either. However, you will need a great deal of willpower to control your life – take over your depression and live a meaningful life. The main factor in overcoming your depression is to start small and gradually do positive things one day at a time. Have a goal and work on it in a daily basis like doing a short walk around the block or contacting your love ones, and by sharing your experiences and failures – you can ease up your depression.

You need to understand that feeling better takes time and effort, but you can achieve it by making positive choices each day. Also, you need to identify the factors that will set you on the road to recovery. Here are some things you need to consider:

Accept the fact that you are not perfect – a lot of people who are suffering from depression are also perfectionists. Most of them have high standards and when they fail to meet these standards, they just beat themselves up. Try to battle this self-imposed stress by changing your way of thinking and allow yourself to be less perfect. After all, you are human and we are prone to mistakes.

Failure is learning – every successful individual have experienced failures. When you fail at something, it doesn’t mean you are weak and doom to fail forever. This only shows you that you made a mistake, and that you have another chance to make the right decision next time.

Choose the people you socialize with – it would be better if you have friends that have a positive outlook in life rather than socializing with people who are pessimistic and worriers. If you are always in the company of people who are optimistic and persistent even in the face of adversities; you will definitely adopt their traits, and they will inspire you to change for the better.

Make a log of your negative thoughts - try jotting down any negative thought you experience and also write the events that triggers it, put it in a small notebook. Then review your log when you’re already in a good mood. Study the situation that led you to that particular thought, think of ways that might prevent you from experiencing that negative thought in the future.

Depression is a normal feeling that we need to deal with every day, but it is one of those hurdles that we need to conquer - in order for us to live a happier life. You have all the right in the world to be happy, but you need to act to achieve it.
